Resumen
Mining activities of multinationals operating in Marmato paradoxically contributes to strengthen the level of influence of grassroots organizations over the mining policy affecting the municipality. With such aim, those organizations articulate with transnational support networks, which render technical assistance and provide visibility of the struggles of such organizations in Colombia and abroad. Thus, a democratic environment flourishes and the overall level of influence of the community over the public sphere is enhanced. Throughout the analysis, this paper contributes to better assess some of the economic and political consequences of globalization, it portrays the insufficiency of classical international relations theory to explain world order, and resembles the resistance struggles of the peoples of Marmato.
