The Kingdom of Bhutan is the only country of the Himalayas whose most of its population is practitioner of the Tantric Mahayana Buddhism and whose performance in both the international arena and its internal administration is closely linked with Buddhist values and principles such as reciprocity, happiness, solidarity, family life, cooperation, among others. An example of this is the creation of Gross National Happiness Index and the initiative for the New Development Paradigm. The current article analyses the key domestic factors that have allowed the development of the nation towards the mentioned policies and explains the influence of Buddhism in the creation of the Bhutanese nation, for which it is done a qualitative analysis of sources, biographies, official documents and national surveys. This will allow explaining the close relation between Buddhism and the current Nation of Bhutan, like so the importance of the New Development Paradigm.
