Resumen
The aim of this article is to explore the implications of the Sino-Russian strategic partnership in the balance of power in the Eurasian region between 2001 and 2014. The association is embodied in the treaty of good neighborliness and friendly cooperation, the co-leadership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization assumed by China and Russia and in multiple assistance efforts made by both nations. This research establishes that a strengthening in the Sino-Russian relations may lead to the establishment of a Eurasian "colossus" that represents a change in the focus of power in the region and a strategic and geopolitical challenge for other powerful actors in the international system competing for influence in the region. This article focuses on analytical categories of geopolitics studied by Nicholas Spykman and Zbigniew Brzezinski. The research will be complemented by the concept of balance of power developed in realist tradition of international relations theory in the context of the work of Hans Morgenthau.
