Resumen
Introduction: Colombia is one of the countries with the highest number of cases due to chikungunya virus (VCHIK). During the epidemic, 466,491 cases and 54 deaths had been reported as of December 2015. Therefore, the objective is to estimate the possible association between the presence of biomarkers and the chronic manifestations of VCHIK disease. Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out from a follow-up cohort of patients from the San Joaquín (Mahates - Bolívar) corregimiento. The sociodemographic and clinical characteristics for each phase of the disease and the immunological biomarkers for the chronic phase were described. Results: Of the 557 patients surveyed, 50.1% (279/557) were women, the average age of the participating patients was 32 years. The acute phase was characterized by the presence of fever, rash, headache. 48.1% (268/557) of the patients went from the acute phase of the VCHIK disease to the subacute phase, with symptoms such as lower limb pain and upper limb pain. In the chronic phase, 22.2% (124/557) of the patients reported continuing symptoms such as limb pain and polyarthralgia. Conclusions: 22.2% of the population with VCHIK disease evolved to a chronic phase of the disease. In most patients with VCHIK disease in the chronic phase of the disease, high levels of biomarkers such as IL-6, TNFα and TGFα were found. No association was found between the immunological markers and the clinical manifestations of the chronic phase.
