Resumen
The main aim of this study is to determine the geopolitical interest that drives Algeria to support the intentions of independence of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). The process of decolonization of Western Sahara has been denied by the colonizing Powers that were located in the Western Sahara, and by Morocco, which claimed possession of that territory. However, Algeria has sponsored the Sahrawi cause by transferring arms and delivering food to the Polisario Front; additionally, Algeria has persuaded 26 countries of the African Union to recognize the existence of the SADR. Nevertheless, behind the Algerian desire on promoting the principle of self-determination a series of geopolitical, commercial and security interests can be satisfied with an independent Western Sahara.
