Resumen
This research seeks to analyze the importance of the participation of the community in the processes of the physical transformation of the city. The research starts from checking up on the process called “Urbanismo social” (Social Urbanism), a specific management model of local government, which was the framework of the development of the “Proyectos Urbanos Integrales” (Integral Urban Projects), in Medellín, Colombia, between 2004 and 2007. Then, as the core of the research, Participatory methodology is analyzed within the “Proyecto Urbano Integral Nororiental” (Northeastern Integral Urban Project), which promoted the use of different mechanisms that facilitated citizen and community participation. Factors of success as well as critical issues in the methodology are identified, in order to contribute to the discussion and building of more effective and efficient strategies of participation in city projects.
