Resumen
Introduction: In the treatment with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) for photoaging hands are not studies showing whether there is any statistically significant difference in the degree of effectiveness and safety while using gel or mineral oil as coupling means.
Objective: To determine the therapeutic effectiveness and safety in the use of mineral oil vs gel.
Materials and Methods: Analytical observational retrospective cohort study involving 29 patients. Done in three phases: selection and collection of medical records, photographic evaluation pre-treatment and post-treatment records to determine the degree of overall improvement in photoaging of hands by three blinded evaluators, and statistical analysis of the data obtained by means of the Mann Whitney and Wilcoxon.
Results: Improvement given by a decreasing degree of photoaging for both coupling means with the same statistical significance was found. The subjective perception showed improvement in all evaluated patients. Security is similar in both groups but was evident in more severe side effects with the use of oil, with statistically significant differences in moderate and severe effects.
Conclusion: The effectiveness is the same independent of the coupling means used. Safety despite evidence a similar profile is greater with the use of gel in terms of lesser severity of the effects presented. Further studies of such controlled trials to determine further evidence is required.
