Resumen
INTRODUCTION
Postmenopausal osteoporosis affects a large proportion of women in the world, most of them over the age of 50, incidence of the disease will continue to increase given the aging population that is accompanied by an increase in the total risk of fractures.
OBJECTIVE
Evaluate the effectiveness of zoledronic acid compared to ibandronic acid for the management of postmenopausal osteoporosis in populations of Medellin and Bogota belonging to IPS Helpharma, who received treatment for a period of 2 to 4 years.
METHODS
Analytical, cohort, retrospective study of 277 patients diagnosed with postmenopausal osteoporosis. The patients were treated for a period of 2 to 4 years at IPS Helpharma in towns of Bogota and Medellin. We included 56 patients treated with ibandronic acid and 221 treated with zoledronic acid. We conducted a stratified random sample by proportional allocation and the distribution by towns was Bogota (n: 99 patients) and Medellin (n: 178 patients).
RESULTS
Ibandronic acid obtained a greater gain in T-score lumbar than femoral level (6% vs 1,5%), major FRAX decreased by 0,5% and the hip FRAX had a gain of 0,1%. zoledronic acid showed a gain in lumbar T-score of 11% and femoral of 5,4%, major FRAX decreased by 0,3% and hip FRAX by 0,1%. Adverse events were presented with a higher proportion in zoledronic acid group. The incidence of fractures in both groups was low.
CONCLUSIONS:
The medications evaluated in the present study showed to be effective within their treatment group and there were no differences in effectiveness between groups, therefore, decision of the choice of treatment is of the doctor and must be individual to each patient.
