Resumen
The use of subdermal implants as a method of birth control has been increasing in recent years; however, despite its high effectiveness, the adverse events generated by its use, lead to its early removal. Goals: To identify reasons for early withdrawal of contraceptive methods such as Jadelle® and Implanon NXT® subdermal implants in three groups of women divided by age. Methodology: Retrospective case control study nested in a cohort of a group of women who attended a family planning program appointment for the removal of the subdermal implant Jadelle® or Implanon NXT® during 2016 in a healthcare provider institution of Bogotá. Results: It was identified that the risk of early withdrawal in users of Jadelle® subdermal implant is more than twice the risk than that in users of Implanon NXT®. The group of adolescents presented the greatest risk of early withdrawal from the method. The fulfillment of time of use is greater in users of Implanon NXT®. Headache is the only statistically significant reason for withdrawal associated with early withdrawal. Discussion: Subdermal implants are highly effective methods of contraception and are frequently used today. Adverse event is the main cause of early withdrawal. This study highlights the importance of providing adequate advice in birth control programs about the benefits of its use, the possible adverse effects and its management to avoid early removal of subdermal implants.
