dc.descriptionRESUMEN: El alga exótica K. alvarezii generó polémicas por su introducción en Venezuela, ya que sus características fisiológicas y estructurales le permiten colonizar con éxito nuevos ambientes. Una inspección de los arrecifes coralinos de la isla Cubagua en agosto y diciembre de 2007, por medio de buceo y con la ayuda de un registro fotográfico, permitió detectar la presencia de K. alvarezii creciendo sobre el coral de fuego Millepora alcicornis. Se observaron cambios en la morfología de K. alvarezii y blanqueamiento del coral en las zonas de contacto con el alga. El crecimiento de K. alvarezii en comunidades coralinas en Venezuela constituye el segundo registro mundial sobre la invasión de esta alga en estos ecosistemas y la primera referencia de este problema en el mar Caribe. ABSTRACT: The exotic alga K. alvarezii generated controversy after its introduction in Venezuela for its physiological and structural characteristics allowed it to successfully colonize new areas. An inspection of the coral reefs in the Island of Cubagua in August and December 2007, using SCUBA equipment and the help of photographic records, allowed the detection of K. alvarezii growing on the fire coral, Millepora alcicornis. Several changes were observed in the morphology of the alga, and the part of the coral in contact with the alga was bleached. The growth of K. alvarezii on coralline communities in Venezuela represents the second world record of invasion of this type of ecosystems by this alga and the first reference of this problem in the Caribbean Sea.
