In the presented thesis we investigate the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency
(EIT) in the hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HC-PCF) filled with acetylene
at pressures <0.7 Torr. In the reported experiments the three-level quantum system of
the acetylene molecules were excited in two different interaction configurations known in
literature as Λ and V . The gas molecules were excited by two independent distributedfeedback
(DFB) semiconductor lasers tuned to two different resonant optical transitions
of the acetylene. While the continuous-wave probe wave was of low intensity, the power
of the amplified 4-40 nanosecond pulses of the light of connection (control) was varied in
the range 0.1–1.2 W. In our experiments we utilized the following absorption lines of the
acetylene: R9 (∼1521.0 nm), P9 (∼1530.3 nm), and P11 (∼1530.5 nm). To characterize
the interaction with the light of control we have measured the Rabi frequency by direct
observation of the optical nutation oscillations in profile of the transmitted pulse of control
(tuned to P11 absorption line of the acetylene) at different gas pressures and pulse powers,
which were found to vary in the range ΩR ∼180-510 rad/seg. From the performed
experiments we have evaluated the efficiency and the relaxation rate of the pulsed EIT
response, and the obtained EIT efficiency dependences were approximated with the theoretical
dependences where we have utilized experimentally measured Rabi frequency and
the molecules relaxation time T1 ∼10 ns and the coherence loss time T2 ∼8 ns. It was
observed that the EIT efficiency is approximately 30 % higher in V than in Λ configuration,
that it is growing with the control pulse power, and can be increased by the careful adjustment
of polarizations of the two interacting waves. The maximum EIT efficiency was found
to be 2-3 times higher in the co-propagation of the probe and control waves configuration
(∼40 %) than in the counter-propagation one (∼15 %). To explain this difference, which
was also known from the existing literature, a simple theoretical model was utilized.
