131 - 151 anabel_fernandezq@yahoo.com semestral Every year on the 12th of October at Quibayo (in the Sorte Mountains, Yaracuy State, Venezuela), a celebration takes place. Mediums come from all over the country to invoke the prestigious spirits of the Indian “court” in order to walk on hot coals. Th is article examines the origins of the ritual “dance” and off ers a succinct description of the ceremony in its current form. It will conclude by proposing several areas for analysis in support of the concept that the cult fosters a dense collective memory which gives rise to multiple, often unorthodox, readings of the historic past.
