dc.descriptionEl terremoto del 26 de marzo de 1812 y la retoma del poder por las tropas realistas en ese año determinaron que el Deán de la Cateal Licenciado Francisco Javier de Irastorza y el Canónigo de Merced Doctor Mateo José Mas y Rubí solicitaran el traslado del Real Colegio Seminario de San Buenaventura a Maracaibo en 1813, donde fue establecido y aprobado con licencia real con el nombre de Real Colegio Seminario de San Fernando. En 1821 el Ayuntamiento de Mérida solicitó al Congreso de Colombia que aquel instituto eclesiástico fuera restituido a la ciudad de su origen para lo cual intervino decididamente el Obispo Rafael Lasso de la Vega, reiniciando sus actividades al año siguiente con las Cátedras de Filosofía, Latinidad de Mayores, Teología de Prima y las demás que se requirieran con la finalidad de seguir formando los curas que necesitaba la Diócesis de Mérida de Maracaibo, pero ahora en el contexto de la República que se había establecido en 1821 con el nombre de Colombia, de la cual formaba parte Venezuela. En tal sentido, en este artículo se expondrán y analizarán los hechos que condujeron a la restitución a Mérida del Colegio Seminario Conciliar fundado por Fray Juan Ramos de Lora como Casa de Educación para jóvenes inclinados a lo eclesiástico el 29 de marzo de 1785.

dc.descriptionThe earthquake on March 26, 1812 and the recovery of power by the realist troops in that same year determined that the Dean of the cathedral, Licentiate Francisco Javier de Irastorza and the canon of mercy, Doctor Mateo José Mas y Rubí would request the transfer of the “Real Colegio Seminario de San Buenaventura de Mérida” to Maracaibo in 1813 where it was established and approved with royal license under the name of “Real Colegio Seminario de San Fernando.” In 1821, the town hall in Mérida requested to the Congress of Colombia that that ecclesiastic institute be reinstated to its city of origin. The Bishop Rafael Lasso de la Vega decisively intervened in this matter and the Seminary restarted its activities on the following year with classes on Philosophy, Latin and Greek Studies, Introduction to Theology, and other required classes with the aim of continuing to prepare the necessary amount of priests for the dioceses of Mérida and Maracaibo. However, the seminary existed in that moment within the context of the Republic that was formed in 1821 under the name of Colombia where Venezuela was located.
