The present text is part of a research about the reproduction of illiteracy in Rio Grande do Sul in the 90'. It focuses the relation between child and adolescent participation in the labor market and illiteracy. More specifically, it examines, on the base of new data, a hypothesis of the early 60'. This consists in that the fact the boys present lower rates of literacy than the girls is a consequence of a greater participation of the former than of the latter in the labor market.O presente texto é parte da pesquisa sobre a reprodução do analfabetismo no Rio Grande do Sul nos anos 90. Ele focaliza a relação entre participação de crianças e adolescentes no mercado de trabalho e analfabetismo. Em particular, examina, com base em novos dados censitários, uma hipótese do início dos anos 60, segundo a qual o fato de os meninos apresentarem taxas mais baixas de alfabetização do que as meninas é resultado de uma presença maior daqueles do que destas no mercado de trabalho.
