Resumen
In 1549 the Jesuit priest Manoel da Nóbrega arrived at the Brazilian shores, and this event marked the beginning of an intensive activity exerted by Jesuits in America. Despite de fact that musical instruments were forbidden by the rules of the Society of Jesus, references to the use of instruments in religious ceremonies and nonsacred events are very frequent in reports left by the Jesuits since their first arrival in Brazil to their extinction and expulsion in 1759. The research in documents written in this historical period can raise significant information about the instrumental practice in Jesuitical establishments in the Portuguese America. As well as original Jesuitical manuscripts from 16th to 18th centuries, publications, modern transcriptions or copies (handwritten, photocopied, scanned and microfilmed) from originals were used in this research too. A reading of these texts can demonstrate that the use of musical instruments is frequently mentioned in descriptions of missions in Indian settlements, while in reports about Jesuitical colleges the only instrument mentioned is the organ. This demonstrates a very close relation between instrumental practice and catechesis of Indians in Jesuitical missions in colonial Brazil, and the persistence of the usual Roman practice in the colleges.
