Resumen
This paper deals with the contribution of the Bergson’s philosophy to the musical theories of Luiz Cosme, mainly the concepts of time and space and their applicability to the musical aesthetics of Brazilian Modern music. To Cosme, the most important contribution of Bergsonism to the musical aesthetics was its concept of duration, which incorporates the psychic interiority by indivisible streams that spread themselves in multiple directions and is characterized by its continuity and its heterogeneity. In his assimilation of Bergson’s conception, Cosme distinguishes two kinds of duration: the objective duration, the acoustical exteriority of the sound; the subjective duration, that is formed by the psychological elements that determinate the musical experience. These concepts are the fundamentals of Cosmes’s aesthetic theory of music and were used to investigate the musical fact and its relationships with other arts.
