The study has the objective of analyzing the indication of active lip bumper (ALB) based on literature review and a case report. The bibliographic research was done on the database found on Medline disregarding Portuguese and English languages. We have come to the conclusion that the main indication of ALB is in cases in which there is little negative discrepancy of space (from 1 to 3 mm) during mixed dentition phase resulting into recovery or keeping space in the dental arch. That process will avoid future extraction of permanent teeth.O presente trabalho visou através de uma revisão de literatura reunir informações a respeito das indicações da placa lábio ativa (PLA), ilustrando o assunto através do relato de um caso clínico. A pesquisa bibliográfica foi realizada nos bancos de dados do "medline", com restrição a língua portuguesa e inglesa. Concluiu-se que a principal indicação da PLA é nos casos onde há pequena discrepância negativa de espaço (de 1 a 3mm), durante a fase de dentição mista, visando a recuperação ou no mínimo a manutenção do espaço da arcada dentária para evitar futura extração de dentes permanentes.
