The viability of fiscal incentives programmes have been examined through many methodological approaches and in many different studies. Despite that, this subject still demands attention. Thus, having the Brazilian North Region as a case study, this paper analyses two fiscal incentives schemes there adopted (FINAM and SUFRAMA) and their impacts on the region's economic dynamic through the period 1970-96. The paper adopts the so-called shift-share methodology to access these impacts and concludes that the incentives do production from SUFRAMA seems to lead to better results in relation to those obtained by FINAM.A exeqüibilidade dos programas de incentivos fiscais já foi objeto de vários estudos e avaliações sob diferentes enfoques metodológicos. Contudo, o tema é recorrente, exigindo mais reflexão. Assim, no contexto do crescimento econômico da Região Norte do Brasil, tenta-se aqui analisar a capacidade de indução dos incentivos fiscais da SUNAM (o FINAM) e da SUFRAMA sobre a dinâmica econômica da Região entre os anos de 1970 e 1996. Por meio do uso do instrumental Shift-Share, obtém-se aqui indicações dos maiores impactos dos incentivos à produção disponibilizados pela SUFRAMA relativamente aos induzidos pelo FINAM.
