The article debates the relationship between the concept of productive chains and some proposals of disequilibrium growth theory and presents the results of a research project on productive chains and investment opportunities in Brazil's Northeast Region. In the first part, the article shows how the concept of productive chain may be useful to study the dynamics of economic growth. The following sections show how the concept of productive chain was applied to study investment opportunities in one of Brazil's poorest regions. The concept of productive chain is used to highlight specific characteristics of the industrial structure of the Northeast region. A taxonomy of investment opportunities is proposed and, at the end, the article focuses on problems of investment coordination in productive chains.O artigo discute relações entre o conceito de cadeia produtiva e algumas propostas das teorias de crescimento desequilibrado e mostra resultados de um estudo sobre as cadeias produtivas da indústria da Região Nordeste, que aborda oportunidades de investimento industrial na região. Na primeira parte, parte teórica, é visto como as cadeias podem ser usadas em estudos sobre a dinâmica do crescimento econômico. Depois, é visto como o conceito de cadeia produtiva foi aplicado para estudar oportunidades de investimento em uma das regiões mais pobres do Brasil. Uma taxonomia de oportunidades de investimento é proposta e, no final, o artigo discute problemas de coordenação de investimentos em cadeias produtivas.
