13-36 anual The Uruguayan born Roberto de las Carreras stands out from socioliterary
Modernist personalities as the faithful representation of end
of century Latin American dandiism. He was stigmatized for his
illegitimate birth and forever accused of being lazy and neurasthenic.
In addition, he was considered a dangerous person and harmful to
the reputation of men and women alike. Once the initial dazzlement
was over, he began to be targetted and was fi nally condemned to
social banishment by his own brand of ethics, which was deviant
in comparison with established moral norms, and by his penchant
for affectation and artifi ce, and, again, by the double personality he
displayed, more as a literary character than as a person.
