distinction between the declarative and interrogative sentence modality. In
this research we have designed a speech perception test containing the
melodic pattern coming from synthesized emissions. Students of French as
a foreign language took the test, which aimed to determine if they were able
to recognize a) the sentence modality and b) the language (Spanish or
French). Results show that while French interrogative sentences were
better recognized than Spanish ones, which might confirm a certain
ambiguity for native speakers. Identifying the language seemed a more
difficult task for listeners, since their answers for both Spanish and French
languages were very close in percentage.
