97-111 soniakraemer@yahoo.es; skraemer@usfq.edu.ec semestral This article tries to demonstrate how Daoist philosophy influenced Chinese landscape painting. Based on the most important treatises, the author analyzes some principles of Daoism and identifies them in landscape painting, showing that Chinese landscape painters do not try to impose on nature the order conceived by humans; that the painter intends his painting to be a part of it, insofar as he has to be free of all artificiality and, just like nature, be totally spontaneous. Finally landscape painting is a superb language through which a profound understanding of Chinese thought can be achieved.
