Exploiting The Synergy Between Alma And Vlt Ao-Ifu Imaging Using Samples Of High-Z Star-Forming Galaxies

We initially requested funding for a postdoc position to work with spatially resolved imaging in high-z galaxies making use of three approved proposals from ALMA and VLT-SINFONI (AO-aided). Thirty galaxies are selected from the High-Z Emission Line Survey, and selected from three redshift slides, at 0.84, 1.47 & 2.23. The targets are being observed up to an exquisite resolution of ~0.2" equivalent to ~kpc-scales at these redshifts. Targets are extracted from the `main sequence' and most of them show thick disks co-rotating with massive clumps of star-formation -- clumps which have typical star-formation rates ~15x higher than those seen in local HII regions. The ALMA and SINFONI data provide two gold-standard tracers of the star-formation rate, far-IR continuum and HII line emission. Its combination at matched 0.2" resolution in a statistically significant sample provides a unique and novel approach to identify the most common mechanism triggering star-formation in three redshift slides. Our data would allow the creation of spatially resolved extinction maps, test the cosmic evolution of the Tully-Fisher relation, and constrain the actual nature of the clumpy structures optically seen high-redshift galaxies – observables which bring strong consequences for our current understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. However, there was a significant delay in the delivery of these data and alternative projects were pursued in the interim period.
