The development of applications of mechanical, optical or electronic devicesfor arrangement (ordering) storing, retrieving, communicating and displaying (including printout) the UDC (Universal Decimal Classification) Schedules with or without natural language vocabularies, indexes, thesauri, etc., and for control and listing of titles in abstracts of articles, books or data inventories, is reviewed from the earliest suggestions and attempts at use of edge-notched or optical coincidence cards, through the era of sorting and tabulating devices, to the decade of on-line computer systemsand networks. The work of the FID/CCC-M (Mechanization of U.D.C. Subcommitteeof the Central Classification Commission of FID) from 1963 to date in communicating the efforts along these lines of scores of documentalistsand librarians in 30 countries and in co-sponsoring several InternationalConferences or Seminars during this period, is also reviewed, andthe results of over 72 experimental or operational programs in 19 countriessummarized briefly by country and by project. A bibliography of nearly 300published articles or reports referring to such works is appended along with subject and author indexes for those who wish more detailed information.
