The medieval tithe, instituted as a divine debt that should be paid by all lay members of the Christian community for the sustenance of the clergy, the maintenance of the churches, and the assistance of the needy is considered, historically, one of the most important elements in the constitution of a sense of identity and belonging to Christianity. Gradually defined and transformed by the Church from the 9th to the 14th century, the discourse on tithes is present in sermons, conciliar canons, theological treaties, and, from the 1140s, also in juridical works. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the appearance and growth of works that compiled, organized, and commented the decisions made by the Roman Church¿s high hierarchy in councils, bulls, and decretals had an essential role in the construction of the ecclesiastical and juridical discourse on tithes. From the sources of the period we observed that the control and collection of tithes served important religious, political, and social functions. Among these functions we can highlight the political, spatial, and conceptual organization of parishes, of dioceses, and of the papacy itself. Therefore it is this thesis¿s goal to understand how tithes became an essential element in the constitution of jurisdictions and spaces of authority in Latin Christianity between the 12th and 13th centuries. With this purpose, our source was the Summa Aurea (ca. 1253), written by the cardinal-bishop of Ostie, Henry of Suse (1200-1271), also known as Hostiensis. We also made use of other canonists with whom Hostiensis established a fruitful dialogue, such as Gratian, Raymond of Penafort, and Geoffrey of Trani, in order to analyze the construction of the discourse on tithes in a context of juridical plurality. Documental analysis was made through the perspective of Reinhart Koselleck¿s Conceptual History. We aim, then, to understand and contextualize the concepts that are part of the construction of tithes: jurisdiction, spaces of authority, ius commune, aequitas, temporalia and spiritualia. Due to its double nature ¿ spiritual and temporal at the same time ¿ tithes contemplated all aspects of the definition of the Ecclesia and of its dominium in medieval society, revealing themselves as indispensable elements in the delimitation of episcopal and papal jurisdictions and acting directly in the establishment of spaces of authority Doutorado Historia Cultural Doutora em História 142723/2011-8 2280/11-6 CNPQ CAPES
