Sedentary behavior has a strong association with all-cause mortality and reduced life expectancy. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this research was to analyze the sedentary behavior by evaluating the time spent watching TV and other sitting activities (excluding TV) of adults living in the city of Campinas, SP. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional population-based study that analyzed data from the ISACamp 2014/15 Survey. The two dependent variables of the research were: the total daily time spent sitting, without watching TV; and TV watching time, categorized in (1) 0 to 4 hours and (2) over 5 hours during the week, measured using IPAQ. The independent variables were: Demographic variables (sex, age, skin color, marital status and religion), socioeconomic variables (schooling, health plan, number of individuals at home, per capita income, occupation and number of children), related behaviors (leisure , transport and domestic physical activities, smoking, alcoholic and beverage consumptions [AUDIT]). Prevalence estimates and confidence intervals of 95% of the most time spent sitting were evaluated according to the independent variables. The associations among categorical variables were analyzed by the chi-square test. The Poisson regression was also used to estimate the prevalence ratios and a Stepwise model were determined. RESULTS: The study evaluated 1,865 adults, in which 52.3% (n = 1,065) were females and 48% (n = 800) males with mean age of 43.7 years. The average daily time spent watching TV was detected as 2.9 hours; and the total sitting time spent without TV was 2.9 hours, resulting in a total average sitting of 5.8 hours. In the first stage of the final model, a greater prevalence of the TV time domain > 5 hours was observed for people who were separated, divorced or widowed. The greater sedentary behavior in this domain was among individuals with family per capita income > 3 minimum wages. It was observed that being single, being female and included in the highest educational level (PR = 2.05) has joined with the longest time sitting in other activities and the lowest prevalence in this area was found for the elderly. In stage 2, to be idle at leisure (RP = 1.30) and presenting alcohol consumption risk (AUDIT) (PR = 1.43) was associated with the longest time watching TV. The time spent sitting in other activities was almost three times higher for people who are inactive at work (PR = 2.79). COLCLUSION: This study allowed concluding that the sedentary behavior indicators revealed different results. Special attention should be directed to the population subgroups that present greater sedentary behavior in the TV domain, considering the associations with the lowest social stratum and with other unhealthy behaviors Mestrado Epidemiologia Mestra em Saúde Coletiva 01-P-1738/2016 CAPES
