Procura-se, então, indagar os tratamentos que Jorge Amado dispensou ao negro e sua cultura nestes romances, sem perder de vista os projetos do escritor em formulá-Ios na chave de uma arte proletária Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to investigate the specific ways in which the writer Jorge Amado (1912-2001) dealt with the racial problem in his romances written in the 1930s: País do Carnaval (1931), Cacau (1933), Suor (1934), lubiabá (1935),Mar Morto (1936) and Capitães da Areia (1937). In order to accomplish this, these romances were examined in a twofold analysis: on one hand, we studied the patterns used by the author and his contemporaries to appraise his books. This was done as a means to grasp what Jorge Amado called proletarian literature. On the other hand, we examined the relationship and the alliances between Amado and other intellectuals who were a1so studying the reality of black peop le in Brazil. Among this group of intellectuals, Édison Carneiro (1912-1972), Arthur Ramos (1903-1949) and Gilberto Freyre (1900-1987) were the most important to Jorge Amado. This way we tried to investigate how Jorge Amado represented and dealt with black people and their culture in these romances, and we kept in mind the fact that the writer intended to formulate these books as part of a proletarian art Mestrado Mestre em Antropologia
