Abstract: This dissertation presents the results of a longitudinal study on the emergence of individual style and argumentation. The methodology used in this study is based on the indiciary paradigm for investigation in the Humanities [Ginzburg (1968)], given that this paradigm takes into account data often considered marginal in studies not preoccupied with a subject's "work" in the representational construction of written language. Argumentation is understood according to Perelman [(1996) with Olbrechts- Tyteca)], (1997). The principal question of this study is whether style can be found in argumentation. Style is understood as a matter of choices [Possenti (1988)] as realized in language understood as constitutive [Franchi (1977)] and as activity [Geraldi (1995)], within a Bakhtinian framework (1992a, 1992b), which establishes dialogue as the principal linguistic mechanism. Relations between the self and another within language are assumed to be constitutive not only of the subject's argumentation, but also in terms of the development of style. Within this perspective, as postulated by Bakhtin (op. cit.) and revealed within the analysis of the subject's writing, argumentation and style are founded on discourse genres.
