The objective of this dissertation is the study of the dynamics of competition in the access market of the Brazilian internet sector, through the application of a History-friendly agent-based simulation methodology, from a complexity theory perspective. The focus of research is the analysis of the processes of sectoral structure organization and change and their impact on interfirm competitive dynamics in the internet access services market, in the period 1996-2010. The central hypothesis is that specific features of the institutional environment in the sector were determinant for the dynamics of these processes. The simulation model is based on neo-Schumpeterian evolutionary theory, combined with the relevant attributes of contemporary institutional theory. As will be shown, the empirical results are not adequately explained by any of these theories, individually, nor by traditional Industrial Organization. Our working hypothesis is that the integration of a dual, co-evolutionary theoretical perspective will allow the proper handling of stylized facts resulting from empirical analysis of the sector. A modeling solution is proposed to answer some of the key questions about the dynamics of competition in the internet access market. It is expected that the results be relevant to improve the knowledge about an important sector in Brazil, on the basis of an innovative approach. The proposed research is intended to offer a contribution to studies on industry dynamics and competition in differentiated sectors, in the area of industrial economics Mestrado Ciências Economicas Mestre em Ciências Econômicas
