The financial innovations that have occurred throughout the 1980s contributed to the emergence of a new modus operandi of the US economy. The 1980¿s were marked by the appearance of new assets and financial products and new ways to increase debt and leverage by changing the decisions taken by many economic agents, regarding the performance of their spending, their allocative asset choices and fund raising. These profound changes were responsible for gradually transforming American families in the main macroeconomic agent capable of guiding the growth of income flows and the rise of the stocks of wealth. In parallel, there was the expansion of financial derivative markets able to provide to the agents in these markets new forms of financial returns provided by the ability to "virtually" leverage themselves, i.e. without debt creation or liabilities expansion. The post-Keynesian theoretical scope, focused on analyzing the portfolio choices of agents, raising funds and cyclical dynamics of debt, is able to provide the theoretical basis for understanding this new modus operandi. However, in the case of financial derivatives markets and the "virtual" leverage, conducting a further study is necessary, in order to find a theoretical consistency able to understand how agents perform their allocative choices in these markets and its macroeconomic impact. In this sense, this thesis aims to analyze the transformation of the US economy driven by the above theoretical optics, as well as build a theoretical interpretation on the financial derivatives consistent with the mentioned bias and able to contribute to the understanding of today¿s real world Doutorado Teoria Economica Doutor em Ciências Econômicas CAPES
