Resumen
Introduction: Nasal obstruction is one of the major abnormalities that affect nasal patency (NP) and consequently is associated with mouth breathing (MB). Considering the importance of respiratory complications and its relation to the mechanism of nasal obstruction, emphasizes the need and importance of this type of evaluation in the pediatric and adult population. Objective: To present an update of the literature on the objective instruments to assess the nasal patency of the upper airway and its applicability in respiratory evaluation of individuals mouth breathers. Synthesis of data: Summary of the findings the literature review was conducted using the keywords: mouth breathing, nasal obstruction, nasal patency evaluation instruments and traditional goals of airway permeability: rhinomanometry, nasal sniff nasal inspiratory pressure peak flow, acoustic rhinometry, rhinomanometry and nasal spirometry. A summary of the work was organized featuring the more traditional objective instruments found in the literature. Based on selected studies, discussed the indication of these resources for evaluating the patency of the upper airways. Conclusions: The objective respiratory evaluation of mouth breathers can be performed by various traditional instruments used both in evaluation, diagnosis and identification of effects of interventions these subjects. © 2014 Copyright Moreira Jr. Editora. 72 7 315 319 Bermuller, C., Kirsche, H., Rettinger, G., Riechelmann, H., Diagnostico accuracy of peak nasal inspiratory flow and rhinomanometry in functional rhinosurgery (2008) The Laryngoscope, 118, pp. 605-609 Caromano, F.A., Godoy, P., Niitsuma, L.E.M., Avaliagao funcional fisioterapeutica do RO (2000) Arq Ciencias Saude Unipar, 4 (2), p. 111120 Cassano, M., Maselli, A., Mora, F., Cassano, P., Rhinobronchial syndrome: Pathogenesis and correlation with allergic rhinitis in children (2008) International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology, 72, pp. 1053-1058 Par, C., Gordts, F., Consensus report on acoustic rhinometry and rhinomanometry (2005) Rhinology, 43, pp. 169-179 Ggo, C., Ctenas, B.B., Takahashi, D.Y., Mion, O., Mello, J.F., Jr., Butugan, O., Comparagao entre a Rinometria Acustica "Peak Flow" Nasal Inspiratorio e sua Correlagao com Sintomas e Sinais Clinicos de Rinite.
