Resumen
Chemistry underwent considerable growth in Brazil, in the last 20 years. This period of qualitative and quantitative improvements is concurrent with the lifetime of the Brazilian Chemical Society. The formation of this Society answered to the needs of Brazilian chemists, which could only be answered by a proper learned professional society. In its first years, the SBQ performed the important role of organizing the academic chemists and voicing their demands. Later on and up to the present, it has been instrumental in the construction of the community of chemical researchers, with whom it has a profound identity. 20 SI 5 6
