EFFECTS OF LIGHT AND CARBOHYDRATE CONTENT ON ROOTING OF RHIZOME CUTTINGS OF PASPALUM-VAGINATUM SWARTZ (GRAMINEAE)

Light and the balance between carbohydrates and auxins play an important role in rooting. The role of these factors in rooting was enhanced in cuttings kept in darkness. Light inhibits root formation especially when directed at the area where roots are initiated. In cuttings maintained in darkness there was a decrease in the carbohydrate content and an increase in rooting percentages. Treatments with sucrose increased the endogenous levels of carbohydrates of the cuttings with concomitant reduction in rooting. Experiments with indol-3yl-butyric acid and 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid also suggest the involvement of auxins in the rooting process. 139 6 727 730
