Resumen
The influence of pasture use intensity on ant-diaspore interactions was investigated in the Brazilian Pantanal. Ants were sampled using models of myrmecochorous diaspores placed in pastures with intensive and extensive use. The two types of pasture showed low ant species richness and high species similarity, suggesting that only a few species are able to persist in this simplified environment. Diaspore removal was higher in intensive use pastures, indicating a disturbance-related change in the interaction among ants and diaspores. The factors that may account for the observed pattern are discussed. 45 3 915 923 Andersen, A.N., Fisher, A., Hoffmann, B.D., Read, J.L., Richards, R., Use of terrestrial invertebrates for biodiversity monitoring in Australian rangelands, with particular reference to ants (2004) Austral Ecology, 29, pp. 87-92 Beattie, A.J., (1985) The Evolutionary Ecology of Ant-plant Mutualisms, , Cambridge: Cambridge University Press Chambers, J.C., MacMahon, J.A., A day in the life of a seed: Movements and fates of seeds and their implications for natural and managed systems (1994) Annual Review of Ecology and Systematics, 25, pp. 263-292 Feinsinger, P., (2001) Designing Field Studies for Biodiversity Conservation, , Washington DC: The Nature Conservancy Folgarait, P.J., Gorosito, N., Invasion of Camponotus punctulatus ants mediated by agricultural disturbance: Consequences on biodiversity and ant community foraging (2001) Ecología Austral, 11, pp. 49-57 Folgarait, P.J., D'Adamo, P., Gilbert, L.E., A grassland ant community in Argentina: The case of Solenopsis richteri, and Camponotus punctulatus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) attaining high densities in their native ranges (2004) Annals of the Entomological Society of America, 97, pp. 450-457 Galetti, M., Parques do Pleistoceno: Recriando o Cerrado e o Pantanal com a megafauna (2004) Natureza & Conservação, 2, pp. 18-24 Guimarães Jr., P.R., Cogni, R., Seed cleaning of Cupania vernalis (Sapindaceae) by ants: Edge effects in a highland forest in south-east Brazil (2002) Journal of Tropical Ecology, 18, pp. 303-307 Hamilton, S.K., Human impacts on hydrology in the Pantanal wetland of South America (2002) Water Science & Technology, 45, pp. 35-44 Hölldobler, B., Wilson, E.O., (1990) The Ants, , The Belknap Press of Cambridge University Press Howe, H.F., Implications of seed dispersal by animals for tropical reserve management (1984) Biological Conservation, 30, pp. 261-281 Hughes, L., Westoby, M., Removal rates of seeds adapted for dispersal by ants (1990) Ecology, 71, pp. 138-148 Janzen, D.H., Management of habitat fragments in a tropical dry forest-growth (1988) Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden, 75, pp. 105-116 Kremen, C., Assessing indicator species assemblages for natural areas monitoring: Guidelines from a study of rain forest butterflies in Madagascar (1992) Ecological Applications, 2, pp. 203-217 Laurance, W.F., Gascon, C., How to creatively fragment a landscape (1997) Conservation Biology, 11, pp. 577-579 Lobry De Bruyn, L.A., Ants as bioindicators of soil function in rural environments (1999) Agriculture, Ecosystems and Environment, 74, pp. 425-441 MacMahon, J.A., Jordan III, W.R., Ecological restoration (1994) Principles of Conservation Biology, , Meffe, G.K. & C.R.
