Resumen
Avian bornavirus (ABV) has been identified as the cause of proventricular dilatation disease in birds, but the virus is also found in healthy birds. Most studies of ABV have focused on captive birds. We investigated 86 free-ranging psittacine birds in Brazil and found evidence for natural, long-term ABV infection. 20 12 2103 2106 Delnatte, P., Ojkic, D., Delay, J., Campbell, D., Crawshaw, G., Smith, D.A., Pathology and diagnosis of avian bornavirus infection in wild Canada geese (Branta canadensis), trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator) and mute swans (Cygnus olor) in Canada: A retrospective study (2013) Avian Pathol, 42, pp. 114-128. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/03079457.2013.769669 Kistler, A.L., Gancz, A., Clubb, S., Skewes-Cox, P., Fischer, K., Sorber, K., Recovery of divergent avian bornaviruses from cases of proventricular dilatation disease: Identification of a candidate etiologic agent (2008) Virol J, 5, p. 88. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1186/1743-422X-5-88 Honkavuori, K.S., Shivaprasad, H.L., Williams, B.L., Quan, P.L., Hornig, M., Street, C., Novel bornavirus in psittacine birds with proventricular dilatation disease (2008) Emerg Infect Dis, 14, pp. 1883-1886. , http://dx.doi.org/10.3201/eid1412.080984 Lierz, M., Hafez, H.M., Honkavuori, K.S., Gruber, A.D., Olias, P., Abdelwhab, E.M., Anatomical distribution of avian bornavirus in parrots, its occurrence in clinically healthy birds and ABVantibody detection (2009) Avian Pathol, 38, pp. 491-496. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/03079450903349238 Heffels-Redmann, U., Enderlein, D., Herzog, S., Herden, C., Piepen-Bring, A., Neumann, D., Occurrence of avian bornavirus infection in captive psittacines in various European countries and its association with proventricular dilatation disease (2011) Avian Pathol, 40, pp. 419-426. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/03079457.2011.589825 Weissenböck, H., Bakonyi, T., Sekulin, K., Ehrensperger, F., Doneley, R.J., Dürrwald, R., Avian bornaviruses in psittacine birds from Europe and Australia with proventricular dilatation disease (2009) Emerg Infect Dis, 15, pp. 1453-1459. , http://dx.doi.org/10.3201/eid1509.090353 Piepenbring, A.K., Enderlein, D., Herzog, S., Kaleta, E.F., Heffels-Redmann, U., Ressmeyer, S., Pathogenesis of avian bornavirus in experimentally infected cockatiels (2012) Emerg Infect Dis, 18, pp. 234-241. , http://dx.doi.org/10.3201/eid1802.111525 Last, R.D., Weissenböck, H., Nedorost, N., Shivaprasad, H.L., Avian bornavirus genotype 4 recovered from naturally infected psittacine birds with proventricular dilatation disease in South Africa (2012) J S Afr Vet Assoc, 83, p. 938. , http://dx.doi.org/10.4102/jsava.v83i1.938 Payne, S., Shivaprasad, H.L., Mirhosseini, N., Gray, P., Hoppes, S., Weissenbock, H., Unusual and severe lesions of proventricular dilatation disease in cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) acting as healthy carriers of avian bornavirus (ABV) and subsequently infected with a virulent strain of ABV (2011) Avian Pathol, 40, pp. 15-22. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/03079457.2010.536978 Rubbenstroth, D., Schmidt, V., Rinder, M., Legler, M., Corman, V.M., Staeheli, P., Discovery of a new avian bornavirus genotype in estrildid finches (Estrildidae) in Germany (2014) Vet Microbiol, 168, pp. 318-323. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.vetmic.2013.11.032 Sassa, Y., Horie, M., Fujino, K., Nishiura, N., Okazaki, S., Furuya, T., Molecular epidemiology of avian bornavirus from pet birds in Japan (2013) Virus Genes, 47, pp. 173-177. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11262-013-0913-3 Villanueva, I., Gray, P., Mirhosseini, N., Payne, S., Hoppes, S., Honkavuori, K.S., The diagnosis of proventricular dilatation disease: Use of a Western blot assay to detect antibodies against avian Borna virus (2010) Vet Microbiol, 143, pp. 196-201. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.vetmic.2009.11.041 Herzog, S., Enderlein, D., Heffels-Redmann, U., Piepenbring, A., Neumann, D., Kaleta, E.F., Indirect immunofluorescence assay for intra vitam diagnosis of avian bornavirus infection in psittacine birds (2010) J Clin Microbiol, 48, pp. 2282-2284. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1128/JCM.00145-10 De Kloet, S.R., Dorrestein, G.M., Presence of avian bornavirus RNA and anti-avian bornavirus antibodies in apparently healthy macaws (2009) Avian Dis, 53, pp. 568-573. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1637/8828-040209-Reg.1 Reuter, A., Ackermann, A., Kothlow, S., Rinder, M., Kaspers, B., Staeheli, P., Avian bornaviruses escape recognition by the innate immune system (2010) Viruses, 2, pp. 927-938. , http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/v2040927
