Resumen
Paper manufacturing and converting involves a multitude of surface chemical interactions. Beating, stock preparation, coating and converting processes are steps where these interactions play an important role for product consolidation and performance. Interactions between fibres and colloidal particles, polymers, minerals and dyes are fundamental in papermaking. Most papermaking interactions are complex and not very Well understood; consequently, many paper formulations are designed according to an empirical trial-and-error approach. This work is a critical literature review of some interactions present in papermaking, coating and printing. In the first part, the current models for fibre surfaces and their interactions in the wet end are discussed. The surface engineering of pulp fibres is also presented of as a good potential for eucalypt pulp and paper, specially for improving strength and absorbing properties. In the second part of the review, the surface chemistry involved in coating formulation and some interactions between the paper surface and printing inks are discussed. The strategic application of surface chemistry can be useful tool, not only for paten and product development, but also to improve troubleshooting and customers support. 63 4 97 107 Beghello, L., The tendency of fibres to build flocs (1998) Tesede Doutorado, , Åbo Akademi University, Turku/Åbo Berg, J.C., The importance of acid base interactions in wetting, coating, adhesion and related phenomena (1993) Nord.
