Resumen
Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is one of the most important myiasis-causing flies and is responsible for severe economic losses to the livestock industry throughout the Neotropical region. A polytene chromosome map is an invaluable tool for the genetic analysis and manipulation of any species because it allows the integration of physical and genetic maps. Cochliomyia hominivorax has a diploid number of 12 chromosomes (2n = 12): five pairs of autosomes and one pair of sex chromosomes (XX/XY), which do not polytenize. We created a new photomap of the polytene chromosomes of C. hominivorax describing its five autosomes (chromosomes 2-6). Pupal trichogen cells, which have chromosomes with a high degree of polytenization, were used to elaborate this map. The photomap was made by comparing 20 different nuclei and choosing, for each chromosome segment, the region with the highest resolution. Thus, we present a new photomap of the five autosomes of this species, with a total resolution of 1450 bands. © 2009 The Royal Entomological Society. 23 SUPPL. 1 92 97 Anderson, W.W., Arnold, J., Baldwin, D.G., Al, E., Four decades of inversion polymorphism in Drosophila pseudoobscura (1991) Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 88, pp. 10367-10371 Azeredo-Espin, A.M.L., Lessinger, A.C., Genetic approaches for studying myiasis-causing flies: Molecular markers and mitochondrial genomics (2006) Genetica, 126, pp. 111-131 Belyaeva, E.S., Demakov, A.S., Pokholkova, G.V., Alekseyenko, A.A., Kolesnikova, T.D., Zhimulev, I.F., DNA under-replication in intercalary heterochromatin regions in polytene chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster correlates with the formation of partial chromosomal aberrations and ectopic pairing (2006) Chromosoma, 115, pp. 355-366 Bridges, C.B., Salivary chromosome maps with a key to the banding of the chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster (1935) Journal of Heredity, 26, pp. 60-64 Bridges, C.B., A new map of the salivary gland 2L-chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster (1942) Journal of Heredity, 33, p. 402 Dev, V., Lachance, L.E., Whitten, C.J., Polytene chromosomes of the screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax (1985) Journal of Heredity, 76, pp. 132-133 Dev, V., Lachance, L.E., Whitten, C.J., Polytene chromosomes, karyotype correlations, and population cytology of the primary screwworm fly (1986) Journal of Heredity, 77, pp. 427-434 Gariou-Papalexiou, A., Yannopoulos, G., Zacharopoulou, A., Gooding, R.H., Photographic polytene chromosome maps for Glossina morsitans submorsitans (Diptera: Glossidae): cytogenetic analysis of a colony with sex ratio distortion (2002) Genome, 45, pp. 871-880 Grushko, O.G., Sharakhova, M.V., Shevshenko, A.I., Karagodin, D.A., Karamsyheva, T.V., Rubtsov, N.B., Stginiy, V.N., Characterization and comparative analysis of DNA from the pericentric heterochromatin of the chromosome 2 of Anopheles atroparvus V.
