Resumen
In the municipality of Pedreira in São Paulo State, Brazil, a large number of workers from the ceramic industry have left their jobs because of work related musculoskeletal disorders. The objectives of this study were to describe the work conditions pertaining to the ceramic industry, to determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and to identify the associations between symptoms and organizational, biomechanical, psychosocial and individual variables. Nine ceramic manufacturers participated. The activities of 18 individuals were analyzed through direct observation. All workers answered a questionnaire about work and health (n = 235). The results found that the general working conditions in the pottery manufacturers were poor. A 38.5% prevalence of musculoskeletal pain was found. Repetition, tool use, lack of control over decisions, worries regarding work demands, relationship issues, work dissatisfaction and the wish to move on to another function were all associated with pain. We concluded that musculoskeletal pain is one of the outcomes of elevated human requirements resulting from working conditions and organization in the ceramic industry. 26 3 492 502 Nahit, E.S., Macfarlane, G.J., Pritchard, C.M., Cherry, N.M., Silman, A.J., Short term influence of mechanical factors on regional musculoskeletal pain: A study of new workers from 12 occupational groups (2001) Occup Environ Med, 58, pp. 374-381 Guo, H.-R., Working hours spent on repeated activities and prevalence of back pain (2002) Occup Environ Med, 59, pp. 680-698 Chen, J.-C., Dennerlein, J.T., Shih, T.-S., Chen, C.-J., Cheng, Y., Chang, W.P., Knee pain and driving duration: A secondary analysis of the taxi-drivers health study (2004) Am J Public Health, 94, pp. 575-581 Kerr, M.S., Frank, J.W., Shannon, H.S., Norman, R.W., Wells, R.P., Neumann, W.P., Biomechanical and psychosocial factors for low back pain at work (2001) Am J Public Health, 91, pp. 1069-1075 Andersen, J.H., Kaergaard, A., Mikkelsen, S., Jensen, U.F., Frost, P., Bonde, J.P., Risk factors in the onset of neck/shoulder pain in a prospective study of workers in industrial and service companies (2003) Occup Environ Med, 60, pp. 649-654 Kuorinka, I., Jonsson, B., Kilbom, A., Standardized Nordic Questionnaires for the analysis of musculoskeletal symptoms (1987) Appl Ergon, 18, pp. 233-237 Almeida, O.P., Sintomas psiquiátricos entre pacientes com demência atendidos em um serviço ambulatorial (1999) Arq Neuropsiquiatr, 57, pp. 937-943 McAtamney, I., Corlett, E.N., (1992) Reducing the Risks of Work Upper Limb Disorders: A Guide and Methods, , Nottingham: The Institute of Occupational Ergonomics, University of Nottingham Punnett, L., Robins, J.M., Wegman, D.H., Keyserling, W.M., Soft tissue disorders in the upper limbs of female garment workers (1985) Scand J Work Environ Health, 11, pp. 417-425 Chiang, H.-C., Ko, Y.-C., Chen, S.-S., Yu, H.-S., Wu, T.-N., Chang, P.-Y., Prevalence of shoulder and upper-limb disorders among workers in the fish-processing industry (1993) Scand J Work Environ Health, 19, pp. 126-131 Lemasters, G.K., Atterbury, M.R., Booth-Jones, A.D., Bhattacharya, A., Ollila-Glenn, N., Forrester, C., Prevalence of work related musculoskeletal disorders in active union carpenters (1988) Occup Environ Med, 55, pp. 421-427 Silverstein, B.A., Fine, L.J., Armstrong, T.J., Hand wrist cumulative trauma disorders in industry (1986) Br J Ind Med, 43, pp. 779-784 Alexopoulos, E.C., Tanagra, D., Konstantinou, E., Burdorf, A., Musculoskeletal disorders in shipyard industry: Prevalence, health care use, and absenteeism (2006) BMC Musculoskelet Disord, 7 (88). , http://www.biomedcentral.com/bmcmusculoskeletaldisord/, accessed on 29/Jan/2007 Burdorf, A., van der Beek, A., Exposure assessment strategies for work-related risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders (1999) Scand J Work Environ Health, 25 (SUPPL. 4), pp. 25-30 Kilbom, A., Assessment of physical exposure in relation to work-related musculoskeletal disorders- what information can be obtained from systematic observations?
