Resumen
Fatal injuries in children caused by motor vehicle accidents represent a common situation in many countries worldwide. The present study addresses the mortality rate in children as vehicle passengers in Brazil, from 1997 to 2005. To evaluate mortality rates, the number of deaths was collected from the National Mortality Information System (SIM) and the population size was obtained using the Brazilian Bureau Census (IBGE) data available at DATASUS. Mortality rates were estimated in three-year periods and analyzed according to age groups (younger than 1 year old, 1-4 years old, 5-9 years old) and geographical regions using a 95% confidence interval. Overall results showed mortality rates of 5.68, 7.32 and 6.78 (per 1,000,000) for the 1997-1999, 2000-2002 and 2003-2005 periods, respectively for the whole country. Children younger than 1 year old had a mortality rate of 10.18 (per 1,000,000), which was higher than for the other age groups. For the period analyzed, the highest rates were observed for the Mid-West and South regions of Brazil, with rates of 13.88 and 11.47 (per 1,000,000), respectively. These results show the risk of fatal injury in children caused by motor vehicle accidents and may contribute to the establishment of educational campaigns aiming injury prevention in children as vehicle passengers. 15 2 308 314 Observed Patterns of Misuse of Child Safety Seats, , http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/people/outreach/traftech/pub/tt133.pdf, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (1996), US Department of Transportation, Washington, DC Ekman, R., Welander, G., Svanström, L., Schelp, L., Long-term effects of legislation and local promotion of child restraint use in motor vehicles in Sweden (2001) Accid Anal Prev, 33, pp. 793-797 Lyons, R.A., Brophy, S., The epidemiology of childhood mortality in the European Union (2005) Curr Paediatr, 15, pp. 151-162 Razzak, J.A., Luby, S.P., Lafamme, L., Chotani, H., Injuries among children in Karachi, Pakistan-what, where and how (2004) Public Health, 118, pp. 114-120 Kakefuda, I., Yamanaka, T., Stallones, L., Motomura, Y., Nishida, Y., Child restraint seat use behavior and attitude among Japanese mothers (2008) Accid Anal Prev, 40, pp. 1234-1243 Vesentini, L., Willems, B., Premature graduation of children in child restraints systems: An observational study (2007) Accid Anal Prev, 39, pp. 867-872 Bayoumi, A., The epidemiology of fatal motor vehicle accidents in Kuwait (1981) Accid Anal Prev, 13, pp. 339-448 Turner, C., McClure, R., Nixon, J., Spinks, A., Community-based programs to promote car seat restraints in children 0-16 years - a systematic review (2005) Accid Anal Prev, 37, pp. 77-83 Thelot, B., Epidemiologie des accidents chez les enfants et les adolescents (2008) Arch Pediatr, 15, pp. 758-760 Prata, P., Epidemiological transition in Brazil (1992) Cad Saúde Públ, 8, pp. 168-175 Schramm, J.M.A., Oliveira, A.F., Leite, I.C., Valente, J.G., Gadelha, A.M.J., Portela, M.C., Campos, M.R., Transição epidemiológica e o estudo de carga de doença no Brasil (2004) Ciênc Saúde Coletiva, 9, pp. 897-908 Banco De Dados Dos Sistemas De Informações Sobre Mortalidade E Nascidos Vivos 1997-2005, , National Mortality Information System (SIM), Brasília 2007.
