Resumen
Species composition and the pattern of shell utilization by hermit crabs were studied in five areas of Sao Sebastiao Channel. Habitat characteristics were evaluated and related to the presence and relative abundance of crabs. Nine species of hermit crab were found: Clibanarius antillensis, Clibanarius vittatus, Clibanarius sclopetarius, Calcinus tibicen, Paguristes tortugae, Paguristes erythrops, Petrochirus diogenes, Pagurus criniticornis and Pagurus brevidactylus. Habitat complexity, moisture, rocky shore slope and hydrodynamism were the major characteristics influencing hermit crab presence, relative abundance and distribution in these areas. Shell utilization and availability varied among sites and shell utilization seemed to be dependent on differences in local shell supply (size and abundance of living snails) and preferences of the hermit crabs for certain shell types. 32 10-11 1599 1608 Bertness, M.D., Shell preference and utilization patterns of hermit crabs from the Bay of Panama (1980) Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 48, pp. 1-16 Bertness, M.D., Predation, physical stress and the organization of a tropical rocky intertidal hermit crab community (1981) Ecology, 62, pp. 411-425 Borjesson, D.L., Szelistowski, W.A., Shell selection, utilization and predation in the hermit crab Clibanarius panamensis Stimpson in a tropical mangrove estuary (1989) Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 133, pp. 213-228 Forest, J., De Saint Laurent, M., Campagne de la Calypso au large des côtes Atlantiques de l'Amerique du Sud (1961-1962). 6.
