Resumen
This study evaluated the tensile and flexural strength of tungsten inert gas (TIG) welds in specimens made of commercially pure titanium (CP Ti) compared with laser welds. Sixty cylindrical specimens (2 mm diameter x 55 mm thick) were randomly assigned to 3 groups for each test (n=10): no welding (control), TIG welding (10 V, 36 A, 8 s) and Nd:YAG laser welding (380 V, 8 ms). The specimens were radiographed and subjected to tensile and flexural strength tests at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min using a load cell of 500 kgf applied on the welded interface or at the middle point of the non-welded specimens. Tensile strength data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test, and flexural strength data by the Kruskal-Wallis test (α=0.05). Non-welded specimens presented significantly higher tensile strength (control=605.84±19.83) (p=0.015) and flexural strength (control=1908.75) (p=0.000) than TIG- and laser-welded ones. There were no significant differences (p>0.05) between the welding types for neither the tensile strength test (TIG=514.90±37.76; laser=515.85±62.07) nor the flexural strength test (TIG=1559.66; laser=1621.64). As far as tensile and flexural strengths are concerned, TIG was similar to laser and could be suitable to replace laser welding in implant-supported rehabilitations. 24 6 630 634 Yamazoe, J., Nakagawa, M., Matono, Y., Takeuchi, A., Ishikawa, K., The development of Ti alloys for dental implant with high corrosion resistance and mechanical strength (2007) Dent Mat J, 26, pp. 260-267 Contreras, E.F., Henriques, G.E., Giolo, S.R., Nobilo, M.A., Fit of cast commercially pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy crowns before and after marginal refinement by electrical discharge machining (2002) J Prosthet Dent, 88, pp. 467-472 Liu, J., Watanabe, I., Yoshida, K., Atsuta, M., Joint strength of laser-welded titanium (2002) Dent Mat, 18, pp. 143-148 Fujioka, S., Kakimoto, K., Inoue, T., Okazaki, J., Komasa, Y., Metallurgical effects on titanium by laser welding on dental stone (2003) Dent Mat J, 22, pp. 581-591 Jemt, T., Bergendal, B., Arvidsson, K., Bergendal, T., Karlsson, U., Linden, B.O., Laser-welded titanium frameworks supported by implants in the edentulous maxilla: A 2-year prospective multicenter study (1998) Int J Prosthodont, 11, pp. 551-557 Ortorp, A., Jemt, T., Clinical experiences of implant-supported prostheses with laser-welded titanium frameworks in the partially edentulous jaw: A 5-year follow-up study (1999) Clin Implant Dent Relat Res, 1, pp. 84-91 Orsi, I.A., Raimundo, L.B., Bezzon, O.L., Nobilo, M.A., Kuri, S.E., Rovere, C.A., Evaluation of anodic behavior of commercially pure titanium in tungsten inert gas and laser welds (2011) J Prosthodont, 20, pp. 28-31 Monday, J.J., Asgar, K., Tensile strength comparison of presoldered and postsoldered joints (1986) J Prosthet Dent, 55, pp. 23-27 Sjögren, G., Andersson, M., Bergman, M., Laser welding of titanium in dentistry (1988) Acta Odontol Scand, 46, pp. 247-253 Lyra e Silva, J.P., Fernandes Neto, A.J., Raposo, L.H.A., Novais, V.R., Araujo, C.A., Cavalcante, L.A.L., Effect of plasma welding parameters on the flexural strength of Ti-6Al-4V alloy (2012) Braz Dent J, 23, pp. 686-691 Poulon-Quintin, A., Watanabe, I., Watanabe, E., Bertrand, C., Microstructure and mechanical properties of surface treated cast titanium with Nd:YAG laser (2012) Dent Mater, 28, pp. 945-951 Wang, R.R., Welsch, G.E., Joining titanium materials with tungsten inert gas welding, laser welding, and infrared brazing (1995) J Prosthet Dent, 74, pp. 521-530 Hart, C.N., Wilson, P.R., Evaluation of welded titanium joints used with cantilevered implant-supported prostheses (2006) J Prosthet Dent, 96, pp. 25-32 Rocha, R., Pinheiro, A.L., Villaverde, A.B., Flexural strength of pure Ti, Ni-Cr and Co-Cr alloys submitted to Nd:YAG laser or TIG welding (2006) Braz Dent J, 17, pp. 20-23 Takayama, Y., Nomoto, R., Nakajima, H., Ohkubo, C., Effects of argon gas flow rate on laser-welding (2012) Dent Mat J, 31, pp. 316-326 Jemt, T., Linden, B., Fixed implant-supported prosthesis with welded titanium frameworks (1992) Int J Periodontics Restorative Dent, 12, pp. 177-184 Nuñez, J.M.C., Takahashi, J.M.F.K., Henriques, G.E.P., Nóbilo, M.A.A., Consani, R.L.X., Mesquita, M.F., Radiographic inspection of porosity in Ti-6Al-4V laser welded joints (2011) Braz Oral Res, 25, pp. 103-108 Nuñes-Pantoja, J.M., Vaz, L.G., Nobilo, M.A., Henriques, G.E., Mesquita, M.F., Effects of laser-weld joint opening size on fatigue strength of Ti-6Al-4V structures with several diameters (2011) J Oral Rehabil, 38, pp. 196-201 Berg, E., Wagnere, W.C., Davik, G., Dootz, E.R., Mechanical properties of laserwelded cast and wrought titanium (1995) J Prosthet Dent, 74, pp. 250-257 Chai, T., Chou, C.K., Mechanical properties of laser-welded cast titanium joints under different conditions (1998) J Prosthet Dent, 79, pp. 477-483 Wiskott, H.W., Doumas, M.T., Scherrer, S.S., Susz, C., Belser, U.C., Microstructures of brazings and welds using grade 2 commercially pure titanium (2001) Int J Prosthodont, 14, pp. 40-47 Roggensack, M., Walter, M.H., Böning, K.W., Studies on laser-and plasmawelded titanium (1993) Dent Mat, 9, pp. 104-107 Watanabe, I., Baba, N., Effect of welding parameters on penetration of Nd:YAG laser into cast Ti and Au-and Ag-based alloys (2007) Quintessence Int, 38, pp. 614-619 Watanabe, I., Topham, D.S., Tensile strength and elongation of laser-welded Ti and Ti-6AL-7NB (2004) J Biomed Mater Res B Appl Biomater, 71, pp. 46-51 Zavanelli, R.A., Guilherme, A.S., Henriques, G.E.P., Nóbilo, M.A.A., Mesquita, M.F., Corrosion-fatigue of laser-repaired commercially pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy under different test environments (2004) J Oral Rehabil, 31, pp. 1029-1034
