Resumen
This study focused on associations between insomnia symptoms, daytime napping, and falls in community-dwelling elderly, using a population- based cross-sectional design and probability sample with 689 community-dwelling elders. The protocol consisted of self-reported and physical performance variables. The study used univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Prevalence rates for insomnia symptoms and daytime napping were 49.9% (n = 339) and 62.8% (n = 432), respectively. 14.4% reported a single fall and 11.9% reported multiple falls. Falls were associated with female gender (OR = 7.73; 95%CI: 3.03- 19.72), age ≥ 80 (OR = 3.48; 95%CI: 1.54-7.85), napping (OR = 2.24; 95%CI: 1.24-4.05), and depressive symptoms (OR = 1.98; 95%CI: 1.11-3.53). The association between daytime napping and falls corroborates data from international research. Identifying modifiable risk factors may help programs to prevent falls in the elderly. 29 3 535 546 Fabrício, S.C.C., Rodrigues, R.A.P., Costa Junior, M.L., Causas e consequências de quedas de idosos atendidos em hospital público (2004) Rev Saúde Pública, 38, pp. 93-99 Kannus, P., Sievanen, H., Palvanen, M., Jarvinen, T., Parkkari, J., Prevention of falls and consequent injuries in elderly people (2005) Lancet, 366, pp. 1885-1893 Ribeiro, A.P., Souza, E.R., Atie, S., Souza, A.C., Schilithz, A.O., A influência das quedas na qualidade de vida de idosos (2008) Ciênc Saúde Coletiva, 13, pp. 1265-1273 Rubenstein, L.Z., Falls in older people: Epidemiology, risk factors and strategies for prevention (2006) Age Ageing, 35 (SUPPL. 2), pp. ii37-ii41 Bohl, A.A., Fishman, P.A., Ciol, M.A., Williams, B., Logerfo, J., Phelan, E.A., A longitudinal analysis of total 3-year heath care costs for older adults who experience a fall requiring medical care (2010) J Am Geriatr Soc, 58, pp. 853-860 Tinetti, M.E., Kumar, C., The patient who falls (2010) JAMA, 303, pp. 258-266 Deandrea, S., Lucenteforte, E., Bravi, F., Foschi, R., la Vecchia, C., Negri, E., Risk factors for falls in community-dwelling older people: A systematic review and meta-analysis (2010) Epidemiology, 21, pp. 658-668 Reyes-Ortiz, C.A., Al Snih, S., Markides, K.S., Falls among elderly persons in Latin America and the Caribbean and among elderly Mexican-Americans (2005) Rev Panam Salud Pública, 17, pp. 362-369 Siqueira, F.V., Facchini, L.A., Piccini, R.X., Tomasi, E., Thumé, E., Silveira, D.S., Prevalência de quedas em idosos e fatores associados (2007) Rev Saúde Pública, 41, pp. 749-756 Siqueira, F.V., Facchini, L.A., Silveira, D.S., Piccini, R.X., Tomasi, E., Thumé, E., Prevalence of falls in elderly in Brazil: A countrywide analysis (2011) Cad Saúde Pública, 27, pp. 1819-1826 Gabmann, K.G., Rupprecht, R., Freiberger, E., Predictors for occasional and recurrent falls in community-dwelling older people (2009) Z Gerontol Geriat, 42, pp. 3-10 Bekibele, C.O., Gureje, O., Fall incidence in a population of elderly persons in Nigeria (2010) Gerontology, 56, pp. 278-283 Coimbra, A.M.V., Ricci, N.A., Coimbra, I.B., Costallat, L.T.L., Falls in the elderly of the family health program (2010) Arch Gerontol Geriatr, 51, pp. 317-322 Bloch, F., Thibaud, M., Dugué, B., Brèque, C., Rigaud, A.S., Kemoun, G., Psychotropic drugs and falls in the elderly people: Update literature review and metaanalysis (2011) J Aging Health, 23, pp. 329-346 Syllias, H., Idland, G., Sandvik, L., Forsen, L., Bergland, A., Does mortality of the aged increase with the number of falls?
