Resumen
Objective: To analyze the association between nap frequency with frailty status, gender, age, education, family income and the five criteria of frailty. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study assessing 3,075 elderly who met the inclusion criteria. The sociodemographic characterization, cognitive status measures, frailty and nap status were performed. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests for statistical inference. Results: Most elderly napped during the day (61.7%), with an average frequency of 5.9 days per week (SD=1.9). A significant association was found between nap frequency and the frailty dimension of "energy expenditure in physical activity". Conclusion: No significant association was found between nap frequency and selected sociodemographic variables and frailty status among the elderly, except for the criterion of frailty "energy expenditure in physical activity". 27 2 120 125 Xu, Q., Song, Y., Hollenbeck, A., Blair, A., Schatzkin, A., Chen, H., Day napping and short night sleeping are associated with higher risk of diabetes in older adults (2010) Diabetes Care, 33 (1), pp. 78-83 Milner, C.E., Cote, K.A., Benefits of napping in healthy adults: Impact of nap length, time of day, age, and experience with napping (2009) J Sleep Res, 18 (2), pp. 272-281 Lan, T.Y., Lan, T.H., Wen, C.P., Lin, Y.H., Chuang, Y.L., Nighttime sleep, chinese afternoon nap, and mortality in the elderly (2007) Sleep, 30 (9), pp. 1105-1110 Martin, J.L., Ancoli-Israel, S., Napping in older adults (2006) Sleep Med Clin, 1 (2), pp. 177-186 Vitiello, M.V., Sleep in normal aging (2006) Sleep Med Clin, 1 (2), pp. 171-176 Ottenbacher, K.J., Ostir, G.V., Peek, M.K., Al, S.S., Raji, M.A., Markides, K.S., Frailty in older mexican americans (2005) J Am Geriatr Soc, 53 (9), pp. 1524-1531 Ensrud, K.E., Blackwell, T.L., Redline, S., Ancoli-Israel, S., Paudel, M.L., Cawthon, P.M., Sleep disturbances and frailty status in older communitydwelling men (2009) J Am Geriatr Soc, 57 (11), pp. 2085-2093 Fragoso, C.A., Gill, T.M., Sleep complaints in community-living older persons: A multifactiorial geriatric syndrome (2007) J Am Geriatr Soc, 55 (11), pp. 1853-1866 Roth, T., Roehrs, T., Pies, R., Insomnia: Pathophysiology and implications for treatment (2007) Sleep Med Rev, 11 (1), pp. 71-79 Ensrud, K.E., Blackwell, T.L., Ancoli-Israel, S., Redline, S., Cawthon, P.M., Paudel, M.L., Sleep disturbances and risk of frailty and mortality in older men (2012) Sleep Med, 13 (10), pp. 1217-1225 Stone, K.L., Ewing, S.K., Ancoli-Israel, S., Enrusd, K.E., Redline, S., Bauer, D.C., Self-reported sleep and nap habits and risk of mortality in large cohort of older women (2009) J Am Geriatr Soc, 57 (4), pp. 604-611 Tanabe, N., Iso, H., Seki, N., Suzuki, H., Yatsuya, H., Toyoshima, H., Tamakoshi, A., Daytime napping and mortality, with a special reference to cardiovascular disease: The jacc study (2010) Int J Epidemiol, 39 (1), pp. 233-243 Campbell, S.S., Murphy, P.J., Stauble, T.N., Effects of a nap on nighttime sleep and waking function in older subjects (2005) J Am Geriatr Soc, 53 (1), pp. 48-53 Stone, K.L., Ewing, S.K., Lui, L.Y., Ensrud, K.E., Ancoli-Israel, S., Bauer, D.C., Self-reported sleep and nap habits and risk of falls and fractures in older women: The study of osteoporotic fractures (2006) J Am Geriatr Soc, 54 (8), pp. 1177-1183 Ficca, G., Axelsson, J., Mollicone, D.J., Muto, V., Vitiello, M.V., Naps, cognition and performance (2010) Sleep Med Rev, 14 (4), pp. 249-258 Owens, J.F., Buysee, D.J., Hall, M., Kamarck, T.W., Lee, L., Strollo, P.J., Napping, nighttime sleep, and cardiovascular risk factors in mid-life adults (2010) J Clin Sleep Med, 6 (4), pp. 330-335 Folstein, M.F., Folstein, S.E., McHugh, P.R., Mini-mental state".
