Resumen
The petrotympanic fissure, a narrow slit in the temporal bone, allows the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the middle ear to communicate. Both the chorda tympani and the ligament cross the fissure between the posterior region of the joint disk and the malleolar ossicle. The parasympathetic fibers of the chorda tympani spread into the major salivary glands and are responsible for the taste sensibility on the anterior two-thirds of the tongue. After chronological identification of 30 human skulls, petrotympanic fissures were macroscopically and stereomicroscopically analyzed for the presence and disposition of ossification areas. Digitalized images were analyzed using computer program UTHSCSA ImageTool 3.0 (developed by the Department of Dental Diagnostic Science at The University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, Texas). The total extension of the fissures and ossification areas was measured. The macroscopic analysis did not constitute an appropriated method for this evaluation and the ossification of the fissures increased with aging, suggesting its influence on the causes of otalgia in cases of TMJ dysfunction. © 2011 by CHROMA, Inc. 29 4 284 290 Pinto, O.F., A new structure related to the temporomandibular joint and middle ear (1962) J Prosthet Den, 12 (1), pp. 95-103 Komori, E., Sugisaki, M., Tanabe, H., Katoh, S., Discomalleolar ligament in the adult human (1986) J Craniomandib Pract, 4 (4), pp. 300-305 Ioannides, C.A., Hoogland, G.A., The discomalleolar ligament: A possible cause of subjective hearing loss in patients with temporomandibular joint dysfunction (1983) J Maxillofac Surg, 11, pp. 227-231 Cheynet, F., Guyot, L., Richard, O., Layoun, W., Gola, R., Discomalleolar and malleomandibular ligaments: Anatomical study and clinical applications (2003) Surg Radiol Anat, 25, pp. 152-157 Eckerdal, O., The petrotympanic fissure: A link connecting the tympanic cavity and the temporomandibular joint (1991) J Craniomandib Pract, 9 (1), pp. 15-22 Schickinger, B., Gstoettner, W., Cerny, C., Kornfehl, J., Variant petrotympanic fissure as possible cause of an otologic complication during TMJ arthroscopy (1998) J Oral Maxillofac Surg, 27, pp. 17-19 Dubrul, E.L., (1988) Sicher and DuBrul's Oral Anatomy, , St Louis & Tokyo: Ishiyaku Euroamerica Inc Todd, T.W., Lyon, D.W., Endocranial suture closure.
