Resumen
The Brazilian primary energy supply has a significant share of nonrenewable energy, about 52.5%. In fact, oil is the main energy source in Brazil; the current production is about 1.7 million bbl/day and is growing. The established national policy foresees an important economic growth based on a significant energy supply, which, in the present conditions and following the tendency of the last decade, implies an emphasis on non-renewable energy. On the other hand, there are other policies for the use of liquid fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel (obtained from renewable sources), aiming to supply not only the domestic market, but also the international market of liquid fuels, replacing "about 10% of the gasoline consumed in the world". Furthermore, the National Energy Balance shows that the total oil reserves are 18,136,046,241 bbl (or 2,889,487 m3), as of Dec 2006. Recently, Petrobras (the large oil Brazilian company and one of the most important companies in the world) announced that a possible reserve of 5 to 8 billion bbl of good-quality oil was found at a depth of 5 to 7 thousand meters, in the Tupi field. So, oil supply is an important issue of the energy policy and this paper makes different projections for the availability of oil in the future, including the application of the peak oil concept to the country data, and the estimate of this value for oil production.
