Resumen
Over the past decade, interest in drugs derived from medicinal plants has markedly increased. This study was aimed at a literature review focusing on studies investigating herbal drugs and other natural products, as well as their therapeutic application, side effects and possible drug interactions. Few studies were found to support their rational use in dentistry. Since there is an increasing use of phytotherapeutic agents in dentistry, further studies are needed to evaluate their safety and effectiveness for clinical use. 22 8 993 998 Almas, K., The antimicrobial effects of seven different types of Asian chewing sticks (2001) Odontostomatol Trop, 24, pp. 17-20 Almas, K., The effect of Salvadora persica extract (miswak) and chlorhexidine gluconate on human dentin: A SEM study (2002) J Contemp Dent Pract, 3, pp. 27-35 Al-Otaibi, M., Al-Harthy, M., Gustafsson, A., Johansson, A., Claesson, R., Angmar-Mansson, B., Subgingival plaque microbiota in Saudi Arabians after use of miswak chewing stick and toothbrush (2004) J Clin Periodontol, 31, pp. 1048-1053 Ang-Lee, M.K., Moss, J., Yuan, C.S., Herbal medicines and perioperative care (2001) JAMA, 286, pp. 208-216 Bruschi, M.L., Lara, E.H., Martins, C.H., Preparation and antimicrobial activity of gelatin microparticles containing propolis against oral pathogens (2006) Drug Dev Ind Pharm, 32, pp. 229-238 Burdock, G.A., Carabin, I.G., Griffiths, J.C., Toxicology and pharmacology of sodium ricinoleate (2006) Food Chem Toxicol, 44, pp. 1689-1698 Calixto, J.B., Efficacy, safety, quality control, marketing and regulatory guidelines for herbal medicines (phytotherapeutic agents) (2000) Braz J Med Biol Res, 33, pp. 179-189 Cowan, M.M., Plant products as antimicrobial agents (1999) Clin Microbiol Rev, 12, pp. 564-582 D'Auria, F.D., Tecca, M., Scazzocchio, F., Renzini, V., Strippoli, V., Effect of propolis on virulence factors of Candida albicans (2003) J Chemother, 15, pp. 454-460 Dhawan, K., Kumar, S., Sharma, A., Anti-anxiety studies on extracts of Passiflora incarnata Linneaus (2001) J Ethnopharmacol, 78, pp. 165-170 Di Berardino, L., Delia Torre, F., Side effects to castor oil (2003) Allergy, 58, p. 826 Duarte, S., Rosalen, P.L., Hayacibara, M.F., The influence of a novel propolis on mutans streptococci biofilms and caries development in rats (2006) Arch Oral Biol, 51, pp. 15-22 Elnima, E., Ahmed, S.A., Mekkawi, A.G., Mossa, J.S., The antimicrobial activity of garlic and onion extracts (1983) Pharmazie, 38, pp. 747-748 Esteves, I., Souza, I.R., Rodrigues, M., Gastric antiulcer and anti-inflammatory activities of the essential oil from Casearia sylvestris Sw (2005) J Ethnopharmacol, 3, pp. 191-196 Ferreira, C.M., da Silva Rosa, O.P., Torres, S.A., Ferreira, F.B., Bernardinelli, N., Activity of endodontic antibacterial agents against selected anaerobic bacteria (2002) Braz Dent J, 13, pp. 118-122 Fritz, T.M., Burg, G., Krasovec, M., Allergic contact dermatitis to cosmetics containing Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree oil) (2001) Ann Dermatol Venereol, 128, pp. 123-126 Ganzberg, S., Pape, R.A., Beck, F.M., Remifentanil for use during conscious sedation in outpatient oral surgery (2002) J Oral Maxillofac Surg, 60, pp. 244-250 Gentil, M., Pereira, J.V., Sousa, Y.T., In vitro evaluation of the antibacterial activity of Arctium lappa as a phytotherapeutic agent used in intracanal dressings (2006) Phytother Res, 20, pp. 184-186 Groppo, F.C., Ramacciato, J.C., Simões, R.P., Flório, F.M., Sartoratto, A., Antimicrobial activity of garlic, tea tree oil, and chlorhexidine against oral microorganisms (2002) Int Dent J, 52, pp. 433-437 Gupta, M., Mazumder, U.K., Gomathi, P., Selvan, V.T., Antiinflammatory evaluation of leaves of Plumeria acuminata (2006) BMC Complement Altern Med, 2, pp. 6-36 Guzmán-Bianco, M., Casellas, J.M., Sader, H.S., Bacterial resistance to antimicrobial agents in Latin America.
