Resumen
Recognition of individual sea turtles is mostly achieved by checking artificial tags previously attached to them, a method which is made difficult by the considerable tag loss rate and which requires repeated manipulation of the marked individuals. We describe an individual recognition method for sea turtles of the family Cheloniidae based on a mark-recapture study that relied on both artificial tagging (Inconel tags, style 681) and natural marks (facial profile photographs). Juvenile green Chelonia mydas and hawksbill Eretmochelys imbricata turtles were manually caught at Arvoredo Island, southern Brazil, and through visual comparison of facial profile photographs we were able to identify recaptured individuals with 2, 1, or no artificial tags. Additionally, Bayesian inference based on tag loss information indicated that the way a tag is attached (position and distance from the flipper edge) affects significantly the probability of its loss. We encourage the use of photographic identification (facial profile) as a reliable method for individual recognition in studies of cheloniid turtles. © Inter-Research 2008. 5 1 73 82 Alibhai, S.K., Jewell, Z.C., Law, P.R., A footprint technique to identify white rhino Ceratotherium simum at individual and species levels (2008) Endang Species Res, 4, pp. 205-218 Balazs, G., Factors affecting the retention of metal tags on sea turtles (1982) Mar Turtle Newsl, 20, pp. 11-14 Balazs, G., Factors to consider in the tagging of sea turtles (1999) Research and management techniques for the conservation of sea turtles, 4, pp. 101-109. , Eckert KL, Bjorndal KA, Abreu-Grobois FA, Donnelly M eds, IUCN/ SSC Marine Turtle Specialist Group, Blanchard, p Bellini, C., Godfrey, M.H., Sanches, T.M., Metal tag loss in wild juvenile hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) (2001) Herpetol Rev, 32, pp. 172-174 Bennett, P., Keuper-Bennett, U., Balazs, G.H., Photographic evidence for the regression of fibropapilloma afflicting green turtles at Honokawai, Maui, in the Hawaiian Islands (2000) Proc 19th Annu Symp Sea Turtle Biol Cons NOAA Tech Memo NMFS-SEFSC, 443, pp. 37-39. , Kalb H, Wibbels T eds Bjorndal, K.A., Bolten, A.B., Lagueux, C.J., Chaves, A., Probability of tag loss in green turtles nesting at Tortuguero, Costa Rica (1996) J Herpetol, 30, pp. 566-571 Booth, J., Peters, J.A., Behavioral studies on the green turtle ( Chelonia mydas) in the sea (1972) Anim Behav, 20, pp. 808-812 Broderick, A.C., Godley, B.J., Effect of tagging marine turtles on nesting behaviour and reproductive success (1999) Anim Behav, 58, pp. 587-591 Burghardt, T., Thomas, B., Barham, P.J., Calic, J., Automated visual recognition of individual African penguins (2004) 5th International Penguin Conference (IPC04), Ushuaia, , Tierra del Fuego Campbell, G.L., The effects of flash photography on nesting behaviour of green turtles (Chelonia mydas), Tortuguero, Costa Rica (1994) Proc 14th Annu Workshop Sea Turtle Biol Cons NOAA Tech Memo NMFS-SEFSC-351:23-24, , Bjorndal KA, Bolten AB, Johnson DA, Eliazar PJ eds Castro, A.L.F., Rosa, R.S., Use of natural marks on population estimates of the nurse shark, Ginglymostoma cirratum, at Atol das Rocas Biological Reserve, Brazil (2005) Environ Biol Fishes, 72, pp. 213-221 Ellison, A., An introduction to Bayesian inference for ecological research and environmental decision-making (1996) Ecol Appl, 6, pp. 1036-1046 Frisch, A.J., Hobbs, J.A., Photographic identification based on unique, polymorphic colour patterns: A novel method for tracking a marine crustacean (2007) J Exp Mar Biol Ecol, 351, pp. 294-299 Gelman, A., Carlin, J.B., Stern, H.S., Rubin, D.B., (1995) Bayesian data analysis, , Chapman & Hall, London Gherardi, D.F.M., Community structure and carbonate production of a temperate rhodolith bank from Arvoredo island, southern Brazil (2004) Braz J Oceanogr, 52, pp. 207-224 Gope, C., Kehtarnavaz, N., Hillman, G., Würsig, B., An affine invariant curve matching method for photo-identification of marine mammals (2005) Pattern Recognit, 38, pp. 125-132 Grossman, A., Sazima, C., Bellini, C., Sazima, I., Cleaning symbiosis between hawksbill turtles and reef fishes off northeast Brazil (2006) Chelonian Conserv Biol, 5, pp. 284-288 Hammond, P.S., Mizroch, S.A., Donovan, G.P., (1990) Individual recognition of cetaceans: Use of photo-identification and other techniques to estimate population parameters, , International Whaling Commission, Cambridge Houghton, J.D.R., Callow, M.J., Hays, G.C., Habitat utilization by juvenile hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata, Linnaeus, 1766) around a shallow water coral reef (2003) J Nat Hist, 37, pp. 1269-1280 Kelly, M.J., Computer-aided photograph matching in studies using individual identification: An example from Serengeti cheetahs (2001) J Mammal, 82, pp. 440-449 Limpus, C.J., Estimation of tag loss in marine turtle research (1992) Wildl Res, 19, pp. 457-469 Markowitz, T.M., Harlin, A.D., Würsig, B., Digital photography improves efficiency of individual dolphin identification (2003) Mar Mamm Sci, 19, pp. 217-223 McDonald, D.L., Dutton, P.H., Tag retention in leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) at Sandy Point, St. Croix, USVI (1994) Proc 13th Annu Symp Sea Turtle Biol Cons NOAA Tech Memo NMFS-SEFSC-34:253, , Schoroeder BA, Witherington BE eds McDonald DL, Dutton PH (1996) Use of PIT tags and photo-identification to revise remigration estimates of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys imbricata) nesting in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, 1979-1995.
