Two-phase flow maldistribution can have a significant impact on the thermal performance of a heat exchanger. The problem is particularly important in the case of a multiple-pass heat exchanger, when two sucessive passes are linked by a common header. This paper presents a study on the two-phase flow inside a common header. Mass flow rate measurements of each phase performed at each channel outlet of the second pass allowed us to determine the influence of mass flow rate, gas quality, flow direction (upward or downward) and common header geometry upon flow distribution. Local gas void fraction measurements inside common header, performed with a local optical probe, contributed to the understanding of the flow patterns. A two-dimensional two-phase flow computational code was developed from a two-fluid model. Modelling of interfacial momentum transfer was used in order to take into account two-phase flow patterns in common headers. Numerical simulation results show qualitative agreement with experimental results. Present theoretical model limitations are analyzed and future improvements are proposed. 99
