Resumen
This paper investigates the main characteristics, results, and factors that facilitate or complicate the implementation and maintenance of quality improvement programmes in the aerospace supply chain organisations in Brazil. This topic is extremely relevant to the scenario of actual aerospace supply chains, considering that organisations in this sector continuously invest in quality improvement programs, but face difficulties in evaluating the strategic effects on the product quality. We use a quantitative research methodology based on a survey for our investigation. We extensively review the literature to develop our measurement instrument and confirm its reliability and validity through an assessment by experts and a pilot test. The research results indicate that most organisations employ programmes based on the ISO 9001 and AS 9100 standards. We further describe the factors that facilitate or complicate the implementation or maintenance of the quality improvement programmes. We find that most organisations intend to either expand the actual programmes or implement new ones. Our findings suggest that, in general, the implementation of quality improvement programmes yield results beyond expectations in terms of product quality and the satisfaction of external customers. 8 5 893 900 Tata, J., Prasad, S., The role of socio-cultural, political-legal, economic, and educational dimensions in quality management (2003) International Journal of Operations & Production Management, 23 (5), pp. 487-521 Cunha, L.O., Alves, J.M., Application of lean manufacturing and quality management in aeronautical industry (2014) International Review of Mechanical Engineering (IREME), 8 (3), pp. 592-598 (2014) Associação das Indústrias Aeroespaciais do Brasil-AIAB, , http://www.aiab.org.br/portugues/index.php?option=comćontent&task=view&id=13&Itemid=26, 23 July 2014 Hussin, M.S., Zailani, Z.A., Hadi, H., Sanuddin, A.B., Hamzas, M.F.M.A., Process improvement on manufacturing floor through PDCA methodology (2012) International Review of Mechanical Engineering (IREME), 6 (7), pp. 1441-1448 Kainusalmi, M.T., Kinisjärvi, R.S., Varis, J.P., Effects of Tool Modularity and Learning of Manufacturing on the Machining Costs of a Molding Tool (2008) International Review of Mechanical Engineering (IREME), 2 (1), pp. 13-19 Baghel, A., Bhuiyan, N., Wilson, J., A sustainable continuous improvement methodology at an aerospace company (2006) International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management, 55 (8), pp. 671-687 Martínez-Lorente, A.R., Dewhurst, F., Dale, B.G., Total quality management: Origins and evolution of the term (1998) The TQM Magazine, 10 (5), pp. 378-386 Motwani, J., Critical factors and performance measures of TQM (2001) The TQM Magazine, 13 (4), pp. 292-300 Womack, J.P., Jones, D.T., (2003) Lean Thinking: Banish Waste and Create Wealth in Your Corporation, , Simon & Schuster, Inc Womack, J.P., Jones, D.T., Roos, D.A., (2007) The Machine that Changed the World, , Simon & Schuster, Inc Sugimori, Y., Kunusoni, K., Cho, F., Uchikawa, S., Toyota production system and Kanban system: Materialization of just-intime and respect-for-human system (2007) International Journal of Production Research, 15 (6), pp. 553-564 Dahlgaard, J.J., Dahlgaard-Park, S.M., Lean production, six sigma quality, TQM and company culture (2006) The TQM Magazine, 18 (3), pp. 263-281 New, S.J., Celebrating the enigma: The continuing puzzle of the Toyota Production System (2007) International Journal of Production Research, 45 (16), pp. 3545-3554 Kumar, M., Antony, J., Tiwari, M.K., Six Sigma implementation framework for SMEs-a roadmap to manage and sustain the change (2011) International Journal of Production Research, 49 (18), pp. 5449-5467 Voehl, F., (2000) Six sigma: A breakthrough strategy for results.
