Resumen
The authors present a theory for resonant Brillouin scattering for a spatially dispersive medium, using a light scattering geometry of backscattering type. Different incident-scattered polarisation combinations of the light are considered. They use a Green function approach to describe the behaviour of the acoustic phonons in the excitonic medium, calculated via the linear response function method. The interaction between the exciton polariton and the acoustic phonon is via a deformation potential coupling. The frequency spectrum of the scattered light is calculated by taking the thermal average over the phonon states. Some numerical calculations of the Brillouin spectra for CdS are also presented and features of these calculations discussed. © 1985 The Institute of Physics. 18 3 669 683
